Neat Burger's journey, marked by rapid celebrity-backed growth and subsequent challenges, highlights the harsh realities of the hospitality sector. This blog post explores strategies to sustain food businesses amidst rising costs and volatility ...

Neat Burger, oh so green, Plant-based joy, Eco-friendly feast gone wrong

In recent years, Neat Burger emerged as a celebrity-backed vegan concept that promised to revolutionise the fast-food landscape. Founded by famed restaurateur Matthew Kenney and backed by high-profile investors such as Sir Lewis Hamilton, they quickly gained attention and launched multiple locations across the UK.

However, what began as an ambitious venture soon
morphed into a cautionary tale of overreach!

The result was a staggering financial loss of nearly £8 million in 2022. The trajectory of Neat Burger starkly illustrates the importance of strategic oversight in an unpredictable hospitality market.

From my own experiences of operating two food outlets in today's volatile economy, I have gained firsthand insight into the precarious nature of the industry.

The last three years have been particularly harsh, with spiralling energy costs that unexpectedly soared from £2,000 to £5,000 overnight. My own suppliers also raised prices by more than 10%, further squeezing already thin margins.

Meanwhile, across the country, landlords continue to impose annual rent increases regardless of the prevailing trading conditions. It is imperative to recognise that the challenges faced by the food outlets I've been involved with are not an isolated struggle; many operators are facing similar pressures, which amplifies the urgency for effective management.

Neat Burger's rapid rise and sudden fall serve as a stark reminder of how critical it is to avoid overconfidence in business operations.

While its celebrity endorsements and initial buzz created a robust customer base, they failed to adapt to changing customer behaviours and preferences - a cardinal sin in a fast-paced food industry. Overexpansion without adequate operational controls proved detrimental, as complacency led to an unsustainable financial model. It serves as a poignant reminder that even well-funded enterprises can fail without the proper groundwork.

Nonetheless, the hospitality sector is not hopeless!

Strategic survival skills can enable any food business to navigate these challenging times. Smart contracts with rent increase caps can safeguard profitability, whilst maintaining a keen eye on financial metrics ensures exact margins and fair pricing for customers.

Building strong customer relationships through personalised service and recall of previous orders can foster loyalty, keeping clientele engaged even amidst competitive pressures. The mantra remains: “If the numbers don't work, nothing works!

To maintain longevity in the industry, businesses must strategically manage their finances with daily visibility of costs and sales.

Operators should be prepared to pivot quickly, as unforeseen challenges can emerge annually. Before expanding or diversifying, it is crucial to solidify the operational base, and striking a balance between competitiveness and sustainable pricing is vital for long-term success.

Ultimately, the lessons drawn from Neat Burger extend beyond its failings and speak to the core fundamentals that every food business must uphold: control costs, know margins, cultivate customer connections, and build resilience to withstand financial shocks.

The story of Neat Burger underscores the need for hospitality
operators to remain vigilant and adaptable!

For those in this demanding sector, the message is clear: maintain control, know your numbers, and foster resilience to avoid falling victim to the same pitfalls that befell Neat Burger. A Fractional COO like me could provide invaluable guidance in these turbulent times.

Let's marry operational insight with sound strategy and secure your long-term success.

Until next time ...
